The Liver may not have the romanticism of the heart, or the wit & intelligence of the brain, but it is an amazing organ and certainly deserves good care.
The liver plays many essential roles in the body. An under functioning liver can lead to digestive problems, weight gain, constipation or diarrhoea, poor appetite, hormonal problems, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, low energy, weakness and a bad mood.
Excess alcohol consumption is a major problem for the liver which can also lead to liver cirrhosis where extensive scar tissue forms and the liver can’t function.
Amazingly the liver is the only internal organ that can regenerate damaged cells, up to a point. Damage leads to a liver where fat deposits cause the liver to enlarge.
If unchecked the next stage is liver fibrosis when scar tissue begins to form and more liver cells are damaged.
If steps aren’t taken to look after the liver, the final stage is liver cirrhosis. Regeneration is now impossible but in the first 2 stages, the liver can regenerate.
Some of the many functions of the liver ; it secretes bile which breaks down fats from food into small molecules, a bit like how dish washing liquid works on greasy plates.
Bile is vital for efficient fat metabolism. Bile helps the body to absorb and use the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, K and E. Bile also aids the rhythmic contraction of our intestines which helps us pass bowel motions and prevent constipation. The liver is also a storehouse for vitamins A, B12 and D which are released from the liver into the blood stream when needed.
The liver also helps regulate blood sugar levels.The liver also helps regulate hormones, breaking down excess oestrogen, insulin & stress hormones.
So knowing all of this and the vital importance of your liver – you now want to look after it right?
So the best way is to limit alcohol, avoid drugs apart from essential medication, avoid sugar and highly processed food & eats lots of fresh vegetables, some fruits and good quality proteins (un-processed/preservative containing kinds). The liver loves sulphur containing foods such as garlic, onions, legumes and eggs. It adores foods high in soluble fibre. Brassicas aid detoxification so they support the liver. Body Balance gently detoxifies the body, so this too supports the liver.

Liver Cleanse – easy and very effective
Ridding the liver & Gall Bladder of gall stones is one of the most important & powerful approaches you can take to improve your health. Your Liver is a vitally important organ and when cleaned and looked after, will improve your energy, your skin, digestion, sleep, hormones, weight management and overall health of your cells. Allergies and back pain often disappear. Never cleanse when you are really ill (let your body get some of its strength back first).
This cleanse is very safe, easy , and effective.
Ingredients you will require:
120mls, virgin olive oil
Grapefruit, to make 180mls of juice (usually about 4 big Grapefruit, or 6 small)
Epsom salts: 4 Tablespoons (making sure it one that is intended for internal use), mixed into 710 mls of filtered water (once blended together, makes 4 x 180 ml Glasses of Epsom salts water).
Choose a day that allows your system to take it easy on the following day. The day of starting your cleanse, have a no-fat breakfast, so no butter, milk, oils, avocado, or anything fatty or oily – this will allow bile to build up and develop pressure in the bile ducts, which will push more stones out during your cleanse. Fruit breakfasts are a safe option or make up a big pot of vegetable soup & consume for the start day & following day, once you resume eating again. (dont add any oils, fats, creams, butter etc – just vege & water).
Also on the day of your cleanse – use no medicines, vitamins or pills that you can do without; they could prevent success. (liquid minerals are fine – e.g.Body Balance).
2:00 pm:
Do not eat or drink after this time (pure water is fine), if you break this rule you could feel quite ill later on. Get your Epsom salts ready: mix the 4 Tablespoons with 710mls of water, pour into 4 glasses and refrigerate as some people find it easier to drink if it is colder (I personally like to drink it warm – if you dont like the taste then it works to hold your nose while drinking it, or drink it through a straw which by-passes the taste buds on the tongue).
If you want to speed the cleansing of the colon – or if you have constipation or sluggish bowels normally or periodically? If yes then it may well be very supportive to take a Teaspoon of Epsom salts in a glass of warm water last thing at night, for the 6 days before the actual cleanse day. Doing this will clear the bowel and allowing better release results. The bowel must be free of obstruction to obtain best results.
6:00 pm:
Drink your first glass of Epsom salts water (You may add a squeeze of Lemon Juice to help improve the taste if needed – or pinch your nose and just drink it down!, or you may drink a few mouthfuls of water afterwards to get the taste out after drinking Epsom salts or just rinse your mouth.
8:00 pm:
By this time your bowel motions will have started and be regular and very loose!
Drink your 2nd glass of the Epsom Salts water, then get all your bedtime chores done, the timing of drinking the oil blend is critical and you must go to bed directly afterward, no doing dishes or anything else! (apart from cleaning your teeth quickly after drinking down the oil/juice blend).
9:45 pm:
By this time your bowels will likely be nearly empty, and you can go to bed after consuming the oil/juice mix – without making another dash for the bathroom!
Juice your Grapefruit until you have the amount required (180mls) – if Grapefruit are not available you can use a combo of fresh lemon & fresh Orange equaling 180mls.
Combine the 120mls of Olive oil & the 180mls of grapefruit juice together into a suitable sized jar, shake well until combined. Visit the bathroom 1 more time, to ensure after you drink the oil/juice mix you do not delay the time before getting to bed for too long, otherwise it may affect your cleanse results.
10:00 pm: Shake well & Drink the oil/grapefruit juice – get it down in 5 minutes or less (15 minutes for the elderly or weak persons) quickly clean teeth, The sooner you lay down the more stones you will get out. As soon as the drink is down walk to your bed and lay down flat on your back with your head up high on the pillow-having the head and shoulders slightly higher than the rest of the body- try to think what is happening in your liver, sometimes the stones can be felt rolling down the ducts . There is no pain as the Epsom salts opens up the bile duct valves (you must remain laying on your back for 20mins, or on right side, knees raised – similar to fetal position for 20mins ).
Next morning:
6am- Drink your Epsom salts water – if you have indigestion or nausea wait till it passes before drinking the Epsom salts blend (I found if I chewed a very thin slice of raw ginger root it soothes nausea) Don’t drink the third dose before 6:00 am (once again if you have trouble drinking it, use a straw or hold your nose!).
2 Hours later:
Take your last glass of the Epsom salts water, Half an hour later you may eat, eat fruit (I often stew some apples or have a well cooked, blended vegetable soup (no fats or oils in it). One hour later you may eat regular food, but keep it light. Your liver has been through major surgery. By supper you should be feeling recovered, don’t go eating heavy meats etc, keep it to something easily digested.
How did you do?
In the morning you should have started passing stones, they will have been easy to see as they will float (any loose motions will sink), gallstones float because they contain cholesterol. Look for green stones as only bile from the liver is pea green (this is proof they are stones and not food residue) Count them roughly. Most livers contain 2,500 stones approx or more, cleanse the liver until you do 2 cleanses consecutively with no stones released. You may do cleanses at 3 to 4 week intervals & preferably not longer than 7 weeks. Ideal times are a day between full moon & new moon, or new moon & full moon, (avoiding doing the flush on a full moon day when the body & tends to hang onto extra fluids in the brain & tissues & is therefore reluctant to release toxins.
Enhancements to this cleanse – you can also use for 6 days prior to the liver cleanse – malic acid to soften the stones (I have only done this once and I have found the cleanse works just fine for me without this step & the stones come out soft, however others may experience things differently or may want to add this in because it is a good cleanse in addition). Several options containing Malic Acid;
Sour Cherry juice, or otherwise known as Tart Cherry – (which has 4 times the Malic acid than Apples & wont feed Candida) use 250mls of Sour Cherry juice in 500mls of water & sip this each through the day, for 6 days.
Easier to obtain is Cranberry juice and if you can find a good quality Organic one its even better – 500mls of Cranberry juice to 500mls of water, mix and sip this through the day, each day for 6 days.
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, 90mls in a litre of water and sip this though out the day consuming the litre. Do this for 6 days prior to the liver cleanse.
If your sleep is really disturbed and you want to sleep better on your following cleanses you can use 6 – 8 Ornithine capsules with the olive oil/Grapefruit juice blend. Most people do sleep fine but often wake about 5am or 6 am.
