10 Tips On Traveling For Fibromyalgia Sufferers
Hey Everyone! First, let me introduce myself. My name is Jessica Tomlinson, wife of Ryan Tomlinson. He first got the idea to start this site and try to help others because I was assessed with Fibromyalgia. After four years of struggling with this terrible/painful disorder, we figured out that most of my pain was actually caused by my IUD that was causing cysts and had attached to my nerves in my hip. Even though I believe I was misdiagnosed, I still struggled with increasing pain. After having more than 14 surgeries and procedures I have learned different tips on how to live more of a normal life while dealing with this terrible sickness.
Today, I would like to share some travel tips with you. With summer approaching fast and many traveling on vacations or with work I believe these tips could prove useful to you!
10 Tips for Traveling with Fibro:
1. Try to Relax
I know this sounds simple, but as you all know stress is a common factor in fibro pain. Enjoy your time away from the hustle and bustle of life! Try to stay as stress free as possible. If need be, relaxation techniques (breathing deep, closing your eyes ect.) can be a major help! One of my main stress reliefs is to listen to soothing music. Try it!
2. Dress Comfortably
While on the road, dress in comfortable clothing. I know many want to dress up and look cute, but make sure you are comfortable as well. It can be stressful going on vacation/travel, so just pack clothes that you can move easy and relax in. I usually wear sweats and t-shirts while traveling.
3. Keep Warm
I know during the summer months, the heat can be terrible. With that being said, I always hurt when I am cold. Take a blanket or sweatshirt that you can keep warm in. This will keep your muscles relaxed while traveling. Also, warmth can serve as relaxation help.
4. Travel Light
Many times I want to bring my entire closet because I am not sure what I will be doing or what to wear. Try to keep your luggage light. The less you have to carry around, even in your purse, the better you will feel! It is also a stress relief to not have to worry about keeping up with a lot during your travels.
5. Sleep!
Vacations for many means long hours and not enough sleep. The same goes on vacation as when at home, try to get enough sleep! All of you know how much sleep can help or hinder how you feel. Try to get your 6-8 hours while on vacation.
6. Keep Active
Do not become inactive while on vacation. Try to stay active! I know relaxation is a big thing during vacations, but do not become stale. Keep your muscles warm and moving.
7. Body Signals
Listen to your own body! Do not over do it… You know your body. Do not push yourself into doing TOO much. When riding rides or attraction fun, be careful! Think before you act!
8. Eat Well
Pack high in protein snacks. Try to not eat too much junk it will affect how you feel! You can give in every once in a while to your doughnuts or ice cream, but please be careful what you eat.
9. Travel Time
Try to take breaks during your time traveling. Only ride for a couple hours at a time. If you become stiff you will begin to hurt worse. Try to stop to stretch your legs and move around.
10. Have Fun!
Enjoy your vacation! Try to have fun! I know Fibro can be very trying and hindering. Smile! Laugh! Try to truly enjoy the time you have with family and friends! Have a safe summer!!
